If the end of it is full of crap and mouse nests it will not hurt to hose it out real well and let it dry for a day or two first. If they are stuck and not making contact them flashing will not work. Start off by making sure the brushes move up and down in their holders. The brush closest to the winding is the positive with the one closest to you being the negative. Further back in the gen there will be several sets which are the high current ones. There should be a pair of brushes on the end which are the exciter. remove that and you should have access to the exciter brushes. There should be a front cover over the gen. This will give you access to the front side of the generator. Ok you will need to take off that lower cover below the leads. He has an equipment scale, so he weighed it before he delivered it to me this morning. Anyone know if it's TRUE they can be recharged and if so, how to. We do alot of heavy equipment and tractor repairs. So donor motor maybe, but now I'm thinking if all it needs is a "recharge" I should try that first and if it works I could pour a concrete pad for it, set it there put a raincap on it and use it. As that is the most common engine used in them, and most sat outside with an open exhaust taking on rain water and seizing. Lol, and figure I can always buy an oliver cletrac/crawler. I bought it from him for $200 cause I liked it. Then looks to have been owned by general electric. This was originally a military surplus item from a ship. Lincoln welder I think, I'll have to double check that.

But that no one could remember how to do that. He said he has had several old timers tell him that the old DC welders lose their charge basically over time and need to be recharged. Runs great, but no power from the welder. He got it to run, electric starter installed. Was a crank handle start with a starter block off plate on the flywheel.

He bought it at an auction for dirt cheap as it didn't run. My tractor buddy offered to sell me a stationary engine/welder a few weeks ago.
